Social Skills
Once a person understands how to properly regulate emotions, they can begin to address specific social deficits. Deficiencies in social understand and preparedness lead to feelings of isolation, anxiety and at times, depression. Alex targets social skills using Behavior Skills Training (BST) which includes several phases. First by teaching examples and non-examples of a target behavior as well as why that behavior is useful in the applied setting. Next the individual is exposed to peer models engaging in both examples and non-examples (modeling). The next phase includes role-play opportunities during which critical social skills are practiced in a safe setting either with the therapist or with peers. Lastly, the individual is encouraged to apply these skills in the natural world – in school, with friends or acquaintances, in the workplace and other important settings a person may encounter.
